MISSION
The Hero 101 Fund was established in honor of Officer Jeremy Chambers DSN 101 who gave his life in the line of duty as a Cahokia Police Officer. Jeremy began giving to the community of Cahokia as a Cahokia Volunteer Fire Firefighter and as an Emergency Medical Technician with MedStar Ambulance Service. When Jeremy turned 21 years old he became a Cahokia Deputy Marshal and volunteered helping supplement the Cahokia Police Department. Shortly after September 11, 2001 Jeremy and several other firefighters drove to New York to assist with the recovery efforts from the terrorists attack. September 2003 Jeremy was hired by the Cahokia Police Department and attended Southwestern Illinois Police Academy. Jeremy graduated in November 2003.
While on patrol in the early morning hours of April 24, 2006, Jeremy's patrol vehicle was hit by a drunk driver on Rt. 3 near the Moto Station. Jeremy's co workers from the police department, fire department, and MedStar ambulance arrived at the scene. They worked for approximately one hour to free Jeremy from his car. Jeremy was flown to St. Louis University Hospital and died a few hours later.
Jeremy's life decisions clearly indicate that he dedicated his adult life to helping others in the community. The Hero 101 Fund was established to help police officers, firefighters, and EMS workers carry on Jeremy's willingness to help others. The monies are obtained from donations, the golf tournament, and other fund raising initiatives determined by the board.
Donations from the fund are given to officers, firefighters, or EMS workers who are injured in the line of duty. If they are killed in the line of duty the money will be given to their family or a donation will be made to Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors, Backstoppers, or MADD.
The fund will also be utilized to maintain the Jeremy Chambers Memorial located at Rt. 157 and Rt. 3 in Cahokia, IL. and if needed to send an escort officer and one other member of the Cahokia Police Department to Washington DC in the event of another officer's death in the line of duty.
A $500.00 matching scholarship will be awarded on a one time annual basis to a person who is awarded the Jeremy Chambers Memorial Scholarship by Southwestern Illinois College. The Chambers family has established 2 scholarship funds at SWIC. One for Administration of Justice and one for Fire Science.
